Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss es el primer RPG que utilizó una vista en primera persona con movimiento no discreto. Tú, en el papel de Avtiar, ya acostumbrado al mundo de Ultima, tendrás que descender tras la hija del Barón Olmrik hacia el mismo corazón del Abismo Estigio. Debes regresar con la chica, o desaparecer en la oscuridad.
