Tekken 3 Special

"Tekken 3 Special" for the Sega Mega Drive (or Genesis in North America) is a curious example of popular games being adapted for platforms on which they were not originally released. Known for its 3D graphics and deep combat, Tekken was released on consoles significantly more powerful than the 16-bit Mega Drive, and significant concessions had to be made in bringing it to that console.

Such "ports" were often created by small companies or even enthusiasts and distributed on the pirate market, especially in regions where official distribution of consoles and games was limited. As a result, the games could have significant differences from the original:

  • Graphics: Converted to 2D as the Mega Drive did not support the 3D graphics used in the original "Tekken 3".
  • Music and Sound: Limitations of the Mega Drive sound chip may have resulted in lower quality music and sound effects.
  • Playable Characters: Limited number of characters compared to the original game's full roster.
  • Controls and Gameplay: The complex combos and moves found in Tekken have been simplified or modified to accommodate Mega Drive controllers.
  • Menu and Game Modes: Simple menu with limited game modes, often only Arcade and VS (two player).

These versions of games are usually considered a curiosity and are far from the quality of the original titles they are trying to imitate.
