Tiny Toon Adventures (Sega)

Tiny Toon Adventures on Genesis: A Must-Have Platformer

When we talk about platformers on the Genesis, one can't help but wonder, does the platform need another? The answer is a resounding yes if the game in question is Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster’s Hidden Treasure. Brought to you by Konami, renowned for 8 and 16-bit classics like Castlevania, Contra, Rocket Knight Adventures, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, they have once again hit the mark with Tiny Toons.

For those who cherished the Tiny Toon Adventures show, this game is a nostalgic trip, bringing to life beloved characters. Buster's diverse gameplay moves, ranging from walking, running, sliding, to jumping, create an engaging experience. Not to mention, unique power-ups where characters like Little Beeper, Little Sneezer, and Concord Condor help clear the screen of enemies. Just like coins in many games, carrots are your collectibles here, with fifty fetching you a special bomb.

Players get to navigate through a versatile overworld map, uncovering hidden exits and new pathways. With over thirty levels, Buster’s Hidden Treasure ensures extensive gameplay, gradually increasing in difficulty but never feeling too overpowering.

From a visual standpoint, the game is a delight, characterized by bright colors and dynamic animations that encapsulate the cartoon's spirit. Buster's every movement, from jumping to the Sonic-esque idle foot-tapping, is captured brilliantly. Each world is illustrated with vividness, making the game an animated wonder.

Musically, the game might not be groundbreaking, but it certainly complements the gameplay. You'll recognize the cartoon's theme in the initial levels, and even if you don't find yourself humming along, it won't push you to hit the mute button.

However, every gem has its flaws. The game tends to tread on the familiar terrains of platformers, from plains and forests to volcanoes and ice lands. Despite the fresh take on these terrains, a bit more innovation would've been welcome. Boss battles, except for the Elmyra fight, might feel a tad easy for seasoned gamers. Additionally, while Buster is joyous to play as, the inclusion of other characters from the show would've added a welcome variety.

Yet, when the final score is tallied, Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster’s Hidden Treasure stands out as a sheer joy. It may not redefine the platformer genre, but it perfects it. If you have memories tied to the cartoon or are just looking for a fantastic platformer experience, this game is a worthy addition to your collection. After all, as the theme song goes, “We’re tiny. We’re toony. We’re all a little looney. It’s Tiny Toon Adventures; come and join the fun!”
