War Diary

Here you can play dos game War Diary.

Game tells about the Japanese-Korean military conflict of the end of the XVI century. You have to become a Korean general, defending their homeland from the advancing Japanese and drive them back to their islands.

This game lay on some old collection with the following description: “Warcraft 2 (almost)”. Informative ... Of course, I could not stand such a "lure" and installed it. What was seen after the installation did not please me at all. Some lousy little men in blue and red, an unintelligible sound and incomprehensible gameplay (in addition, the pirates cut out video briefings). In general, it was not Warcraft 2. Even almost.

But at that time I didn’t have the unforgettable Tides of Darkness, and Orcs & Humans was already passed along and across. And I sat down for mastering War Diary. What is not regretted. Yes, it was suicidal to compare with the great and terrible (and why does “War” appear in the title?), But now we can look at the game in a new way.

The main thing: this is NOT Warcraft 2. And in no case is it a clone. The first thing that catches your eye - in this RTS there is a change of day and night. And in the afternoon on an open map the fog of war dissipates. But at night you can not see anything beyond their own nose. Secondly, there are four resources in the game: money (not gold - money), forest, food, iron. The first surprise associated with this is that the money cannot be obtained by the peasants. This resource (it is required most) is exchanged in the Town Hall for the rest. Moreover, the exchange rate may rise or fall over time if you oversaturated the market. The forest is routinely cut down by peasants. Food is harvested in special fields that have fertility indices, decreasing with the growth of agricultural work and recovering over time. And iron is produced in special buildings (forges), in which one peasant can work simultaneously.

Military units are not just planed in a la Warcraft barracks. In War Diary, they only prepare infantry. To get a military unit, an infantryman must be equipped with a sword or a bow and arrow. And will become a recruit, respectively, swordsman or archer. Similarly, but in other buildings, horsemen and gunners train. Armament is created in special buildings and can be of different quality. Parameters: cost, efficiency and “durability”. Yes, the weapon with the use of wear, and from time to time have to re-equip your soldiers.

Navy warring parties are represented by only two units. This cannon ships and transport workers. With gunboats, everything is clear. But the second “ship” is a very interesting thing. Forget about the transport of the Warcraft 2 in 1 cell, which can accommodate 6 catapults. The brilliant shuttle War Diary is the most common raft 3 * 3. Units on a raft can move within the free space, shoot and die if they themselves come under fire. Sweat a pontoon - and all your troops will go to the bottom with him. It is clear that the raft, loaded with 5 gunners, surpasses the warship in firepower (and cost). Alternatively, the raft can be used as a bridge. Add to the war at sea that in War Diary there is such a thing as the direction of the wind (all ships move very fast in the wind), and you will find a ton of new tactical combat tactics.

Small details complete the picture: a rather beautiful rain can go with lightning (rain limits the visibility of all warriors, as well as the range of fire of all shooting combat units; lightning can accidentally kill a soldier or damage a building), in the morning roosters wail, the fields being processed sprout. All this is very nice.

In conclusion, I draw your attention to the fact that all the buildings and units of the belligerents look different (the Japanese have guns; Koreans cost with bows), and that the AI is able to surprise. For example, the computer tries to attack only at night and is able to bypass your guard towers.

I hope I managed to show that War Diary is a very interesting and worthy product with a lot of features. For it was not the “Craft” that was united by a military strategist of the mid-1990s.
